“Yves Klein (1928-1962)… Using a synthetic resin binder to suspend the ultramarine, Klein was able to preserve as much of the pigment’s intensity as possible, yielding a brilliant, vibrational new paint mixture. What inspired the artist to create an entirely new pigment? He desired to visually convey what he referred to as ‘the void’—a concept informed by his interest in Zen Buddhist teachings—which gestures to the infinite, immaterial space surrounding the visible universe.”
